Chromebooks are available for in-library checkout to library cardholders ages 14 and older on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. This new digital service was made possible from a Southern California Edison’s Building 21st Century Skills for Tweens and Teens’ grant. Chromebooks can be checked out for two hours per day for in-library use only. There is no fee to check out, however, late fees and total replacement costs will apply if a Chromebook is returned late or is lost. The Chromebook, a simplified, lightweight laptop computer based on Google’s Chrome browser is fast, secure, and simple to use. Registration for the Fall semester of ESL classes at the library begins Monday, August 7 at 12:00 PM. The literacy program has every level of ESL classes available to help adult English learners gain reading, writing and speaking skills. All students are pre-tested and assessed to determine their proficiency levels in Basic English skills and to assist in placement of appropriate classes and services. Proper identification with photo and residence verification MUST BE PRESENTED. Space in the classes is limited and Monterey Park residents will be given priority on waiting list. Adult learners who are more proficient in the English language can further their language acquisition with individualized tutoring to set a personalized learning plan and attain personal goals. Citizenship Preparation classes are also available for individuals who plan on becoming new citizens to gain knowledge on American History, Government and Civics which are covered during the examination. Registration for Citizenship classes is open year-round. Enrollment into all ESL and Citizenship Preparation classes, as well as for the one-to-one literacy program is FREE. The 2017 Teen Summer Reading Program runs from June 12 through July 26. The theme is “Reading by Design.” As teens read books they can receive coupons for a free DVD checkout or use the coupons to enter drawings for various prizes. Join the many fun and exciting programs along with reading for great prizes. Look for other exciting programs in July on Wednesdays. Are you between the ages of 8-14 and interested in creating video games? If so, this is your invitation to join the CS First Coding Club at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library this summer! Age 8-10 students will meet on Tuesdays starting June 20 at 1:30 pm for 8 weeks in the Computer Lab located on the 2nd floor of the library. Age 11-14 students will meet on Thursdays starting June 22 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm for 8 weeks in the Computer Lab. No experience is necessary: design and program your own video games using Scratch code. Learn important gaming and computer science concepts while building racing games, mazes, and other fun digital projects. The CS First Coding Club is part of the Library’s Southern California Edison Building 21st Century Skills for Tweens and Teens’ grant. The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library provides access to technology tools with the goal of promoting education and success for everyone in our community. Read books, win prizes, have fun! The Children’s Summer Reading Program Registration starts May 30! Children ages 0-12 can participate by signing up at the Children’s Desk to receive a log to keep track of the books they read or listen to over the summer. Throughout the summer kids receive prizes for the time that they read. National research has shown that children who read at least six books over the summer score higher in both reading and math when they return to school in the fall. This program continues through July 31 and also features weekly activities for the whole family including movies, game nights, storytimes, puppet shows, musical performances and magicians.
