Global Citizens: One World, Many Stories Summer Library Program for Adults
Discover the diverse cultures and traditions that represent the library community with this year's theme, "Global Citizens: One World, Many Stories," designed to get adults involved with weekly activ ities on family history and multiculturalism. Chromebooks Available @ the Library!
Chromebooks are available for in-library checkout to library cardholders ages 14 and older on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. This new digital service was mad e possible from a Southern California Edison’s Building 21st Century Skills for Tweens and Teens’ grant. Chromebooks can be checked out for two hours per day for in-library use only. There is no fee to check out, however, late fees and total replacement costs will apply if a Chromebook is returned late or is lost. The Chromebook, a simplified, lightweight laptop computer based on Google’s Chrome browser is fast, secure, and simple to use. It uses cloud computing rather than software or storing files directly on the computer. For more information about the new library service, contact the Reference Desk at (626) 307-1368.

LAMP Literacy ESL Registration Day August 7 @12 pm
Registration for the Fall semester of ESL classes at the library begins Monday, August 7 at 12:00 PM. The literacy program has every level of ESL classes available to help adult English learners gain reading, writing and speaking skills. All students are pre-tested and assessed to determine their proficiency levels in Basic English skills and to assist in placement of appropriate classes and services. Proper identification with photo and residence verification MUST BE PRESENTED. Space in the classes is limited and Monterey Park residents will be given priority on waiting list.

Adult learners who are more proficient in the English language can further their language acquisition with individualized tutoring to set a personalized learning plan and attain personal goals.

Citizenship Preparation classes are also available for individuals who plan on becoming new citizens to gain knowledge on American History, Government and Civics which are covered during the examination. Registration for Citizenship classes is open year-round. Enrollment into all ESL and Citizenship Preparation classes, as well as for the one-to-one literacy program is FREE. Summer Reading Programs for Teens June 12 through July 26
The 2017 Teen Summer Reading Program runs from June 12 through July 26. The theme is “Reading by Design.” As teens read books they can receive coupons for a free DVD checkout or use the coupons to ent er drawings for various prizes. Join the many fun and exciting programs along with reading for great prizes. Look for other exciting programs in July on Wednesdays. “Finding Cleveland” Family History Documentary Short Film and Live Music Program
The award-winning documentary short film, “Finding Cleveland” will be screened on Sunday, August 13 at 2 pm in the Friends Room. The film takes the audience on an emotional journey filled with amazin g discoveries as seen through the eyes of Charles Chiu and his family as they take a trip to Cleveland, Mississippi to visit the gravesite of Charles’ father. In less than 48 hours, Charles has many surprising encounters with the local townspeople, who help fill in some blanks about the father he never knew. A live music performance is included with the film experience with filmmakers, Baldwin Chiu and Larissa Lam who will also participate in a Q/A with the audience following the film screening. Summer Flower Show at the Library!
The library invites the public to our 2017 Summer Community Flower Show on Sunday, August 6 at 2 pm in the Friends Room. This is a non-standard flower show and anyone who would like to place an entry is invited. Flower arrangement designers of all ages and nonprofessional skill levels are invited to submit an arrangement. Entries will be categorized by type of arrangement, skill level and adult/youth. Prize ribbons will be awarded to the top entries in each category. The public is invited to view the arrangements. Rules for the show are available at the library and on the library website.
